Pray and Obey

"So I say to you, ask, and it shall be given to you; seek,
and you will find, knock, and it will be opened to you."

Luke 11:9

Jesus taught that prayer is more than asking. Many of us may think of prayer like room service at an expensive hotel. We call the front desk and make our request. Then, we expect someone to knock at our door soon with the service requested. That's not prayer. Prayer is asking, but it is also seeking and knocking. That is the way we pray and obey.

Most of the prayer promises in the Bible are conditional. We are required to do something God commands. The prayer of faith is answered by God according to the promise of his word. Faith must be defined with two sides, trust and obedience.

An old hymn of the church is entitled, "Trust and Obey." That's what faith is all about, trusting God and obeying God. Answered prayer is based on trusting God's Word, as well as obeying God's Word.

As a child, I was always excited to go to the grocery store with my dad. I liked to step on the mat and see the door open automatically. I always wanted to do it several times. You could simply take a step toward the door, and it always opened. God opens doors for us, when we trust and obey. The Bible teaches us to trust God and obey God. Put feet to your prayers. God will answer. Pray and obey.
Father, teach us to be doers of the word and not hearers only. Answer our prayers, as we trust and obey, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
