"But let him ask in faith, with no doubting,
for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea
driven and tossed by the wind."
for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea
driven and tossed by the wind."
James 1:6
Doubt says, "The Bible may be true, but the promises of God may not be for me." Faith says, "For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us" (2 Cor. 1:20). Our faith is based upon the promises of God in Christ Jesus. He is our Yes and Amen to God's promises. When we choose to doubt the promises of the Bible, who are we doubting? To doubt God's Word means that we are saying, "God may not be telling the truth." Who would be foolish enough to question the integrity of the God of all truth? When we see that we are really doubting God's truthfulness, we can confess it as sin, and stand upon the promises of God in Christ.
The greatest foe to a dynamic prayer life is doubt. The apostle James warns that those who doubt shall not receive anything from God. "For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord" (James 1:7). Of course, James is talking about receiving in answer to prayer. Faith comes by standing upon the sure foundation of the word of the Lord (Romans 10:17). When our prayers are based upon the promises of God, we have that sure foundation. We need not struggle nor strive in prayer. We rest upon the truth of God.
The promise that James mentions is God's promise to give every believer wisdom. We need to have the wisdom of God in all the decisions of life. That wisdom is readily available. "If any man lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally without reproach, and it will be given to him" (James 1:5). Ask in faith to receive God's wisdom in your life. He will give you wisdom. When the thoughts of wisdom come, it will be further confirmed by God's peace in your life (James 3:17, 18). Defeat doubt in your life and receive all of God's promises in Christ.
Prayer: Father, we confess our doubts as sin. We stand upon Your promise by faith to receive all that You have for us, through Jesus Christ our Yes and Amen.
