"I pray, LORD God of heaven, O great and awesome God,
You who keep Your covenant . . ."
You who keep Your covenant . . ."
Nehemiah 1:5
The couple had been in their new house less than a year. They noticed some things that needed to be corrected with floor tile. The wife was upset, but the husband said, "Don't worry and fret about it. Our contract requires the builder to make repairs like these within the first year. It's written in the contract." He found the contract and let her read it. The builder honored the contract and made the repairs.
God has given those who love Him and trust in Him a contract. The Bible calls it a covenant. Our Bible is divided into two main contracts, the Old Covenant and the New Covenant, or to use the words from Latin, the Old Testament and the New Testament.

When it came time to pray, Nehemiah knew how to pray and get results. He knew that God would always honor His covenant with those who loved Him and obeyed Him. Faith is simply confidence that God will do what He promised in the covenant.
The believer in Jesus Christ is under the New Covenant. Christ is the Mediator of the New Covenant. He teaches each one of His disciples how to pray, according to New Covenant promises. We call it the model prayer, or the Lord's prayer.

Believers in Jesus Christ have a covenant right to ask Father God to do certain things in our lives. We can ask Him with confidence to give us our daily bread, forgive our sins as we forgive others, lead us not into temptation, and deliver us from evil. Those are covenant promises from the Lord's prayer, and the Lord Himself taught us to pray those requests. We receive according to the New Covenant of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The prayer God answers is based on the covenant word.
Father, give us this day our daily bread. Forgive our sins as we forgive others. Lead us not into temptation. Deliver us from evil, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
