"Oh, give thanks to the LORD!
Call upon His name."
Psalm 105:1
It was Sunday night. The church was having a revival service. That night the pastor asked anyone to stand and give a brief testimony to thank the LORD. One man stood and said, "You don't have to be at church to get right with God. I was in the bath tub when I got to thinking about my sins. Under strong conviction, I called upon the LORD and asked Him to save me. He did, and that's the reason I'm here tonight." The people in the service knew the man well. They knew quite well about his sin, and they gave him a standing ovation after he gave his testimony. They rejoiced with him. He was thanking the LORD for changing his life.
The psalmist said, "Call upon His name." To call upon the LORD'S name is to call upon Him. He is the covenant-making, promise-keeping God. LORD is His covenant name in the Bible. He promises to deliver and save all who call upon Him. "Whoever calls upon the name of the LORD shall be saved" (Joel 2:32; Romans 10:13). This promise is for one and all. "For the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him" (Romans 10:12).
How can we have absolute assurance in our relationship with the LORD? No better assurance can be found than simply taking God at His word. His covenant word changes not. Our surety of that word is the death of Christ at the cross, and His triumphant resurrection (Hebrews 13:20-21). His covenant word is the foundation of our faith, calling on the LORD. God has revealed Himself as LORD in Jesus Christ (Romans 10:9). He saves all who call upon His name.
LORD Jesus, we call upon You to save us.
