Christ Our Sacrifice

"And the LORD has laid on Him
the iniquity of us all."

Isaiah 53:6

An unbeliever asked a Christian minister, "How could a man who lived two thousand years before I was born die for sins that I had not yet committed? It just doesn't make sense to me." The minister replied, "It will never make sense to you until God changes your heart." The man appeared to be angry, saying, "What kind of an answer is that?" The minister responded, "I don't mean to offend you, but that's what the Bible teaches. Only believers can really understand." The man walked away shaking his head.

Those who are in a covenant relationship with the LORD understand from Scripture that Jesus was the sacrifice for our sins. Under the Old Testament, the hands of the priest were laid upon the sacrificial animal, signifying the transfer of sins. They were symbolically laid upon the substitute.

All of the Old Testament sacrifices pointed to the day when the covenant-keeping God laid our sins upon Christ. By faith we receive Him as the sacrifice for all of our sins. "For indeed Christ, our Passover, is sacrificed for us" (1 Corinthians 5:7).

Our sins are either upon Christ or they remain upon us. Do you have the assurance that Christ is the sacrifice for all of your sins? Unbelief responds, "How could I ever be sure?" Faith confesses, "The blood of Jesus Christ, His Son, cleanses us from all sin" (1 John 1:7). Unbelief may be offended by the idea of God's sacrifice for our sins through His Son. Faith receives with assurance based upon God's word of promise.

Father, we receive the sacrifice of Christ for all of our sins.
