will put their trust in You."
Psalm 9:10
The young couple were going through difficult times. His wife said, "We've got to trust God. I know that He will be with us." The husband appeared angry. He replied, "That's easy to say. Besides, I'm not sure that I really know how to trust God." She was understanding, and said, "I can see why you are upset. I am too. Do you trust me?" He looked perplexed. He said, "You know I trust you. No matter what we go through, I trust you." She smiled and sweetly said, "You trust me because you know I love you. You can trust God because He loves you."
It may be easy to trust God during good times, but it may not be as easy during times of trouble. The psalmist was speaking of trusting God through trouble: "The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble" (Psalm 9:9). Trusting in the name of God is trusting who He really is. Those who trust in God are in a covenant relationship with Him. LORD, with all capital letters, is His covenant name, in Hebrew Yahweh. He promises never to forsake those who trust in Him. In a covenant relationship, promises are made with an oath of vows. These are the promises of God. In essence, we can trust God because He is trustworthy for His name's sake.
How can we trust in God? We trust in the promises of His covenant word found in the Bible. His everlasting covenant has everlasting promises for all who trust in Him (Hebrews 13:20-21). To trust in God is to have a personal relationship with Him. When we refuse to trust God, we are saying that He is not trustworthy, and His promises are not reliable. Who would do such a thing? Only those who don't really know God would refuse to trust Him. As the woman said to her husband, "You can trust God because He loves you." Trusting God is about a personal relationship with Him.
Prayer: LORD, we trust in Your name and all of Your promises. Amen.
