Seeing God

"By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king;
for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible."

Hebrews 11:27

As the mother went to help her child get ready for bed, lightning was flashing and thunder was heard. It was a storm outside. The little girl said, "Mom, I don't want to sleep by myself. I'm scarred. Will you sleep with me?" The mother said, "You need not be afraid because God is with you." The little girl replied, "I know that He is with me, but I need someone to see." How can we believe in God if we can't see Him? Moses believed in God. By faith he saw Him who is invisible.

"God is Spirit" (John 4:24). We cannot see a spirit with our natural eyes. The Greek word translated spirit is the word pneuma. It also may be translated air or breath. God is like the air around us. Without Him we would not have life, but we can't see Him with our eyes. Unbelief says, "There is no God because I can't see Him." Faith says, "I come to God believing. 'He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him" (Hebrews 11:6). Everyone who believes in God sees Him the same way that Moses did. By faith we see Him who is invisible.

Faith in seeing God overcomes fear. Moses was not afraid of the anger of the king when he left Egypt. His faith in God overcame all fear. We have a choice to live by faith or to live by fear. In this life, we encounter many storms of different types. It's easy to fall prey to fear. At that point, we have a clear choice. We may see Him who is invisible by faith, or become slaves to fear. Seeing God brings victory over all of our fears.

Prayer: Father, we will fear no evil because You are with us. We see You through the eyes of faith and diligently seek You. We come to You by faith, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
