Does God Hear Prayer?

"But certainly God has heard me.
He has attended to the voice of my prayer."

Psalm 66:19

Does God hear when you pray? Faith agrees that He does. Doubt says, "I will pray. Maybe God will hear me and maybe not." Unbelief asks, "I can pray, but why should I believe that God will hear me?" Faith says, "Certainly God has heard me. He has attended to the voice of my prayer." The psalmist had no doubt that God heard the voice of his prayer. Such faith is not based upon our ability to draw God's attention, rather, it's based upon God's attribute of mercy. The psalmist wrote, "Blessed be God, who has not turned away my prayer, nor His mercy from me" (Psalm 66:20).

What parent would not respond to the helpless cry of a baby? What parent would not respond to the scream of a child in danger? If parents respond to their children, how much more shall our Father in heaven respond to the cry of our prayer?

Understanding that God is full of loving kindness and tender mercy changes our prayer life. When we truly believe that God our Father is merciful, there is a new found confidence that He has heard our prayer. His mercy is consistent and faithful. The psalmist David wrote, "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life" (Psalm 23:6).

Prayer: Father, we know that You hear our prayers because of Your great mercy toward us. We come confidently to You in prayer to receive fresh mercy, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
