"Why has this people slidden back,
Jerusalem, a perpetual backsliding?
They hold fast to deceit. They refuse to return."
Jerusalem, a perpetual backsliding?
They hold fast to deceit. They refuse to return."
Jeremiah 8:5
He was an active member of his church. He was admired and respected as a good husband, fine father, and the example of faithfulness. Somehow he changed, and it wasn't for better. He became estranged from his wife, distant with his children, and no longer desired to be a faithful member of his church. Not many people noticed the change at first. But slowly over the weeks and months, it became very apparent. He wasn't the person that he used to be. He asked his wife for a divorce, lost interest in being a good father, and had no desire for spiritual things. What happened? No one knew for sure.
The prophet Jeremiah called out to God's chosen people of Jerusalem who were backslidden. He called them to return unto the Lord, but they would not listen. He warned them of certain judgment, but they would not believe him. He was without one single convert. Why would the covenant children of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob become indifferent toward God? Jeremiah had the answer. They were filled with deceit. They were obstinate in their refusal to return to the Lord.
Any of us could play the role of a backslider. No one is exempt. Let me give you some notable examples: Noah, Samson, David, as well as the apostle Peter. The list could include many more biblical characters. The point is that it could include your name and mine. Those most vulnerable include those who are sure that it could never be them. The apostle Peter was in this category at one time. However, there is good news. God calls us to return. He loves us still. His arms of mercy and grace receive us when we return unto Him. The choice is ours. Return to God.
God, we have failed You in many ways. We return to You, through Jesus Christ. Amen.
