Your Self-Image

"For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was."

James 1:23-24

A mirror doesn't lie. It shows the truth when we face it. We see ourselves as we really are. We're not ready for the day until we look into the mirror. A man said, "I have to maintain a clear conscience, because everyday I must look myself eye-to-eye in the mirror." The Bible is like a mirror. As we read the pages of God's Word, we see ourselves as we really are.

Another minister said to me, pointing to his Bible, "Sometime I don't like this book, because it shows me my sin." If we look into the mirror of God's Word long enough, we too shall see our sins.

When we look into the mirror of God's Word, we see more than our sin. We see ourselves loved by God. The good news is that God loves sinners (Romans 5:8) and He has provided a way of forgiveness through Christ our Lord (1 John 1:7).

A pastor suggested to his congregation to look in the mirror every morning and repeat the words, "God loves me." A lady said to him the next Sunday, "I did what you said. It touched my heart, but my tears ruined my make-up." The pastor smiled and suggested that she say it before putting on her make-up. Remember today and every day that God loves you.

When we receive God's love by faith, then we can love ourselves, and most importantly, we can love others. "If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself,' you do well" (James 2:8). If we don't accept God's love for us, it's not possible to love others with His unconditional love. What do you see in the mirror, looking at yourself?

Father, help us to see ourselves in the light of Your love.
