When a Christian Falls

"Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall."

1 Corinthians 10:12

The children were at the skating rink for a birthday party. As they were skating, Johnny fell to the floor. All the children laughed at him, and he laughed at himself. A few minutes later, Joyce fell on her skates. When the children laughed, she started crying and wanted to go home. She later said to her mother, "When Johnny fell, it was funny, but when I fell it was so embarrassing." Her mother said, "We should all be careful about laughing at others. Anyone can fall."

The apostle Paul warns us as Christians to take heed. No one is exempt. Anyone can fall into sin. We see notable examples in the Bible such as Noah, Samson, David and Simon Peter. No one is exempt. It's unthinkable that any believer would get satisfaction out of another believer falling.

The apostle has some good advice when another Christian falls: "If a man is overtaken in a fault, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in the spirit of meekness, considering yourself, lest you also be tempted" (Galatians 6:1).

How should we respond to a fallen brother or sister in Christ? First of all, we should consider ourselves. No one is exempt from temptation. No room for self-righteousness here. We should approach others who have fallen with gentleness and humility. Every believer has a ministry to help restore the fallen. Our support and encouragement is needed. After all, what if you fall?

Father, by your grace keep us from falling.
