"The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit
that we are children of God."
Romans 8:16
Long before a child can read, he knows his dad. He knows his voice and his love. Years later, the child goes to school to learn how to read. One day he can read his birth certificate. It gives factual information about his parents and date of birth. Yet, the child already knows his dad through a personal relationship. So it is with our heavenly Father. We are His children through a personal relationship. It's a relationship of faith and love. It's a heart to heart relationship.
One day a father had to tell his twelve year old son that he was adopted. The father said to him, "You are our son, because your mother and I chose you. We wanted you, and we will always love you no matter what happens." The boy was silent for a moment, then he said," You are the only dad I have ever known, and you're the best dad a boy could ever have." Then, he said similar words to his mother.
The boy didn't know his biological father, but he had a personal relationship with his adopted dad. His words told it all. God our Father chose to adopt us into His family (Ephesians 1:4-5). He's the best Father we could ever have.
Our eternal identity is not based on our educational accomplishments, vocational success, nor our fame or fortune. We are God's children now and forever through faith in Jesus Christ. "For you are all children of God through faith in Jesus Christ" (Galatians 3:26).
Thank You God for the witness of the Spirit that we are Your children.
