God is Good to All

"The LORD is good to all,
and His tender mercies are over all His works."

Psalm 145:9

The car was coming up the driveway. The driver saw an injured bird on the ground. A cat was about to devour the bird. The man honked his horn. The cat ran away, and the man moved the bird into his basement. He cared for the bird a couple of days, until it was able to fly away. He showed his goodness to a helpless bird. His desire was to see the bird fly free again. God is like that to us. He is good to all, and His tender mercies are over all.

God shows His goodness to all in the natural world. He sends sunshine, rain, and fruitful seasons. He satisfies our appetite with good things to eat. He provides for our needs. His goodness leads us to repentance (Romans 2:4). Repentance is a change of mind about God and the direction of our lives.

Unbelief blames evil upon God, saying, "There must not be a God, because there is so much evil in our world." Faith says, "There must be a God, because there is so much evil in our world. Man's evil would have already destroyed the world, if it was not for the goodness of God."

Man's evil comes to its finish at the cross of Jesus. Our Lord went about doing good to all. Yet, evil men clamored for his death. He took all of our evil sins upon Himself at the cross. Three days later, goodness had the last word. "He is risen." Jesus demonstrated the goodness of God upon the cross toward the very men who mocked him and crucified Him. He prayed, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." God is good to all.

God, we praise You for Your goodness!
