The Words You Speak

"And the LORD heard the sound of your words,
and was angry, and took an oath saying,
'Surely not one of these men of this evil generation
shall see that good land which I swore to give your fathers."

Exodus 1:35

A children's fable tells the story of a bird who caught it's supper by his mouth. As he flew to the nest, he was so proud of himself that he opened his mouth to boast of his catch. That's when he lost his supper. The same thing happened to the people who opened their mouths to displease God. They lost the promised land for their generation.

Words are important. They can change the direction and destiny of our lives. Words spoken by faith from the heart can receive God's salvation in Christ. Those words are, "Jesus is Lord" (Romans 10:9). Words express what's in our hearts. "For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation" (Romans 10:10).

A man said to his friend, "I just say what I think." The friend said, "Well, I hope you have a clean mind, because a lot of dirt could come out of your mouth." Our words may encourage people or offend people. Words may strengthen others, or they can destroy.

Words are like a match. It can start a fire to warm a house or cook on an oven. Also, a match can start a fire to destroy houses and land, as well as taking peoples lives. Words are powerful. God hears our words.

May the words we speak be acceptable to You our God.
