Your Burden

"Cast your burden on the LORD,
and He will sustain you."

Psalm 55:22

She said to her daughter, "You look so sad. Is something wrong?" Her daughter said, "I've got a problem that has bothered me for days. It stays on my mind. Really, I feel depressed and don't know what to do." She shared the details of the problem with her mother. The daughter felt helpless to change her situation. Her mother said, "No one wants a burden like you have, but it is a time for you to know God's help. He will lift that burden as you share it with Him in prayer." They had prayer together. A few days later, the daughter said, "The problem has not changed, but the burden is gone. He took it away."

A burden may be defined as a heavy load of care, causing us to feel helpless and depressed. Burdens are a common part of life. Prayer offers a way to cast our burdens upon God. He may not change your circumstances immediately, but "He will sustain you." Casting our burdens upon the LORD means that we are willing to let go of them. We may be helpless but He is not. The load of care may be too much for us but never too much for Him. The words of an old song say: "Take your burden to the LORD and leave it there." That's just what we do in prayer, as we admit our helplessness. Our God is the Help of the helpless.

What's your burden? More importantly, what will you do with it? If we hold on to it, the load becomes heavier, and the depression can almost become unbearable. Our strength diminishes oh so fast, as we cling to the burdens of life. Frustration gives way only to more despair. There is a better way. "Cast your burden on the LORD." We can no longer cling to it, when we cast it upon Him. Then, God's grace will sustain us.

LORD, we give our burden to You.
