Billy Graham wrote, "You cannot think your way to God, or use wisdom alone. You must use your heart." Trying to think your way to God is impossible. Philosophers have tried it. Theologians have attempted it. The results are always the same, fruitless. The reason being that the mind of man is corrupted because of sin. God says to us, "My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts" (Isaiah 55:8-9).
Sin has contaminated every area of our lives, and that includes our thoughts. The Bible commands us to let go of our sinful thoughts and turn to God. "Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts. Let him return unto the Lord" (Isaiah 55:7).
Pride causes us to believe that we have understood when we are blind to the truth of God. Even when we read the Bible, our thoughts can lead us to misunderstand. The book inspired by the Spirit can only be understood by the Spirit of truth. We can only find God when He does something in our hearts. The Spirit of grace reveals the living Christ to us.

These are the words to a gospel song: "When I could not come to where He was, He came to me." The Spirit of the living God comes to our hearts with love, mercy, and grace. He enables us to believe with our hearts, because God changes our hearts. Then and only then are we able to trust God and believe on His Son. "For with the heart one believes unto righteousness" (Romans 10:10).
