"So that they should seek the Lord . . .
though He is not far from each one of us."
Acts 17:27
A skeptic said to a Christian, "I could never believe in God. There is no scientific evidence for God. It's all myth and fantasy. How can you believe in a God that you can't see?" The Christian responded, "How can you breathe air that you can't see? We don't see the air that gives us life anymore than we see the God who created our lives." The skeptic said, "Well, I've never thought about it that way before." The Christian said, "I hope you will continue to think about God, because He is as near as the air you breathe."
We may think about God as being far away, and so He is, but He is also very near. God is everywhere, omnipresent. Just like the air we breathe, He is near to everyone of us. He sustains our lives from minute to minute, just like the air around us. "For in Him we live and move and have our being" (Acts 17:28). Again, like the air we breathe, we cannot see God. "God is Spirit" (John 4:24). That's the reason we must come to God by faith. And what is faith? Faith is "the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1).
God is near you now and always. You cannot escape His presence. You are free to deny His presence and even ignore Him, but He is still there with you, as He is everywhere. If you have faith in God, you are "seeing Him who is invisible" (Hebrews 11:27). Unbelief says, "I don't believe in God because I can't see Him." Faith says, "He is not far from each one of us." Unbelief and faith have one thing in common. Both of them come as a choice. The main difference is that faith seeks God and is rewarded. God is "a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him" (Hebrews 11:6). Will you believe God is near?
Prayer: God, You are near us all the time. We choose to walk with You by faith, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
