When Jesus Cried

"Jesus wept."

John 11:35

Years ago, Senator Edmund Muskie was a candidate for his party's nomination to become President of the United States. At a campaign appearance he came to tears over an issue that touched him deeply. The news media had much to say about it. His popularity in the polls began to plummet. For all practical purposes, his campaign ended the day he cried publicly. It was thought by a majority of citizens polled that his tears showed a sign of weakness incompatible with serving as the leader of the nation.

After Lazarus died, Jesus was with his sisters at the grave. The Bible simply says, "Jesus wept." It was not a sign of weakness but a tender display of compassion. Jesus wept with those who were grieving their brother's death. He cared, and He still cares about people. He was moved with compassion then, and today He still moves in the lives of people with loving compassion. He is touched by the feelings of our weakness.

Jesus cares for you as much as He cared for Lazarus. He understands that we are weak and sometime helpless. His compassion for us is forever real. In the words of an old gospel song: "No one ever cared for me like Jesus. No one else could be as kind as He. No one else could take the sin and darkness from me. Oh, how much He cares for me." No matter who you are or what you have done --- Jesus cares about you. When Jesus cried, His loving care was displayed not in words but with tears. He cried because He has a heart for people like Lazarus, you and me. Don't doubt it; Jesus cares about you.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for caring about us, and proving it when You died on the cross.
