God Bless

"Blessed is the man to whom
the LORD shall not impute sin."

Romans 4:8

Repeatedly, a well-known NFL star has been interviewed over nationwide television. He always ends his interview by saying, "God bless." I've often wondered if the millions who hear him know what that expression means. In Romans 4:8, the apostle Paul quotes from Psalm 32:2. "God bless" begins with the first covenant blessing. God forgives all the believer's sins. They are no longer counted against him. By faith he is made righteous before God (Romans 4:5). "God bless" is for all who trust in God's mercy and grace.

David, the psalmist who wrote Psalm 32:2, was a man who had committed sins. We read about them in the Bible. Yet, he was a man who repented and put faith in God. He knew the blessing of sins forgiven. Those same sins were not imputed to him. His account before God was wiped clean. He was justified before God. The record of his sins was removed. The same can be said of all believers.

Why would God wipe away all of our sins and not count them against us? The believer understands that it's simply because of God's grace, unmerited favor. "Therefore it is of faith that it might be according to grace, so that the promise might be sure to all the seed" (Romans 4:16). The seed refers to all who are saved by grace through faith. "God bless."

Prayer: LORD, we receive the blessing of sins forgiven, and not counted against us, in Jesus name. Amen.
