A Restless Life

"There remains therefore a rest for the people of God."

Hebrews 4:9

Saint Augustine wrote, "You have made us for Yourself, O God, and our hearts are restless until they find rest in You." Rest is about our relationship with God. Those who refuse to trust in God are destined to continue a life of restlessness. It may be that we will only trust in God to find rest when we have exhausted our search for purpose and fulfillment in life. Someone has said, "When you have tried everything else, try God." Unfortunately, many do try everything else but trusting in God. Sadly, they are plagued with a restless life that becomes weary and meaningless.

How can we possibly find God's rest? It comes only through a faith relationship with God. "But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him" (Hebrews 11:6). It's possible to be a believer, and yet have an area in our lives where we simply don't trust God. Then, our hearts grow weary with restlessness, until we give it all to Him. Finally, at long last, sweet rest comes to the soul.

Is there a restless area in your life? Do you find it hard to trust God in that one issue? If that is the case, restlessness will finally take its toll, and when it does, give it all up to Him. You will be so glad, because there is still a rest for the people of God. There is a promise for all who are restless. Jesus said, "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). "There remains therefore a rest for the people of God."

Prayer: Father, we confess that we are restless without You. We surrender every area of our lives to You, that we may find rest through the promise, in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
