"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for,
the evidence of things not seen."
the evidence of things not seen."
Hebrews 11:1
Billy Graham wrote, "I have asked a number of scientists questions concerning life after death, and most of them say, 'We just don't know.' Science deals in formulas and test tubes. But there is a spiritual world science knows nothing about." The question may be asked therefore: How can we really know about the spiritual world? The answer is clearly found in Hebrews 11:1. In the spiritual world, faith knows the truth on the authority of God's Word.
Faith and hope are both mentioned in Hebrews 11:1. Both of these abiding gifts of the Holy Spirit give evidence of things not seen (1 Cor. 13:13). Unless the Holy Spirit enables us to know things not seen, we are left helpless to understand. All of our efforts to have a breakthrough in understanding spiritual things are futile, until the Holy Spirit works in our hearts. Through the good news of Christ, we have access to the things of God through the Holy Spirit. He leads us to experience the living Christ by faith (John 16:7-11). He gives us hope in the life eternal. He leads us into all truth in Christ, according to the Scripture.
A new Christian said to her pastor, "I want so much to grow in my faith, but it seems to be such a struggle for me. I want to understand the things of God. Can you help me?" He said, "There is one who can help you far more than I can. The Holy Spirit is our teacher who will lead us into all truth in Christ." That pastor shared with her the secret to all genuine growth in Christ. He works in us a growing faith to know the things of God.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, be our teacher guiding us into all the truth of Christ, that we may grow in faith and hope, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
