God's Purpose for You

"That they may be called trees of righteousness,
the planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified."

Isaiah 61:3

A college student made an appointment to see his pastor. He said, "I really don't know what my purpose is in life. I'm in my sophomore year, and I still don't know for sure what my vocation will be. I need your counsel." The pastor said, "There is a difference between your purpose and your vocation. We all have different vocations, but we all have the same purpose in life, and that is to glorify God. No matter what we do in life, our goal should be to bring glory to God."

The prophet Isaiah reminded the people of God that they were planted as trees of righteousness. God had a certain place to plant them. Their righteousness was not self-righteousness, but He was their righteousness. "Now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS" (Jeremiah 23:6). Their purpose was to glorify God. So it is with all of God's people. No matter where the LORD plants our lives, it is to bring glory to His name. That is the purpose of all life.

An all-star baseball player spoke at a church, saying, "The most important purpose in my life has never been baseball. My purpose in life is to bring glory to God. He has given me the talent, and a measure of success, for one purpose alone, to glorify Him. To God be all the glory." The apostle Paul put it this way, "Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31). That's your purpose in life.

Father, You have given us purpose in life for Your glory in Christ.
