"That was the true Light which gives light
to every man coming into the world."
to every man coming into the world."
John 1:9
There is an old gospel song I Saw the Light. I remember these words from the song: "Just like a blind man that God gave back his sight, praise the Lord I saw the light." Jesus is "the true light to every man coming into the world." There is no problem with the light. The problem is with man. We are spiritually blind. Light does a blind man no good until his eyes are opened. Jesus said, "Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God" (John 3:3). The kingdom of God is the kingdom of light. At conversion, through repentance and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, we are called "out of darkness into His marvelous light" (1 Peter 2:9).
A woman had attended church off and on all of her life, but she had never been converted. One Sunday she attended church with a friend. After the service, she said to the pastor, "This was such a different service. I don't know how to explain it. I would say it's like my eyes have been opened. I have heard about Jesus all of my life, but now, today, all of a sudden, He is so real to me." The pastor smiled and said, "Welcome to the kingdom of God. You now know Jesus in a very personal way. We call it conversion." She smiled and said, "I don't know what to call it, but I love Jesus and He is so real to me now. I'm full of joy."
A hymn, "Since Jesus Came Into My Heart," includes these words: "I have light in my soul for which long I have sought, since Jesus came into my heart." That woman saw the Light. His name is Jesus. The hymn also has these words: "Floods of joy o'er my soul, like the sea billows roll, since Jesus came into my heart." That same woman knew joy, because she really knew Jesus. Can you say, "I saw the Light?"
Father, we praise You for the Light - Jesus Christ our Lord.
