"Today, if you will hear His voice,
do not harden your hearts, as in the rebellion."
Psalm 95:7-8
As I picked up my house phone, there was no sound at all. The phone service was out of order. I discovered later that all the telephones in the area were without service. An underground phone cable had been broken unintentionally by construction workers not far away. The service was not restored until the next day. That experience made me think of our relationship with God. Sin has broken man's fellowship with God. The communication is broken, because of the hardness of our hearts. We don't hear His voice.
The children of Israel in the Old Testament rebelled against God in their wilderness journey. They were delivered from Egypt, but when they came to a certain place, they refused to hear and obey God's voice. They hardened their hearts. At that point, they refused to go on with God. Today, God wants to speak to us through His Word, the Bible. He wants us to hear and obey. The choice is ours. The hardened heart always rebels against the voice of God through His Word. Disobedience is the sin that hardens our hearts.
God wants two-way communication with every believer. He wants to speak to our hearts through the Bible, and He wants us to speak to Him through prayer. As long as the communication is not broken, our hearts are opened to God. Disobedience interrupts our fellowship with God. There is good news! The fellowship can be restored through the confession of our sins (1 John 1:9). God is able to create within us a clean heart and renew a right spirit within us (Psalm 51:10).
God, create in us a clean heart.
