God's Mercy on Us

"For indeed he was sick, almost unto death,
but God had mercy upon him . . ."

Philippians 3:27

The books by Walter Hunt have had a great influence on my prayer life. One of the things that Dr. Hunt taught me was praying the attributes of God. These attributes include love, grace, power, peace, as well as mercy. The list goes on and on. The attributes of God are the words which define His character according to the Bible.

The apostle Paul prayed for a friend in ministry who was sick almost unto death. He recognized that God had mercy upon him. The Lord had heard his prayer for mercy.

Our relationship with God begins with a prayer for mercy. We realize that we have sinned against God. We deserve judgment, but we ask for mercy. Jesus told the story of a man who prayed for mercy. He knew that he was a sinner, therefore, he asked God for mercy. It was a short, one sentence prayer. "God be merciful to me a sinner." Jesus taught that the man was justified before God through mercy. All of us need the mercy of God.

A Christian told a man that he could be right with God, if he would ask for mercy. The man looked like he had been slapped in the face. He said, "Why should I ask for mercy? I live a good life, and everything is going fine." He simply didn't understand that we have all sinned (Romans 3:23). Our only hope is in the mercy of God. Ask for mercy.

God, have mercy on us.
