Why Christ was Born

"But when the fullness of the time had come,
God sent forth His Son, born of a woman,
born under the law, to redeem those
who were under the law . . ."

Galatians 4:4-5

When the Christmas season approaches, we see lights, nativity scenes, and hear carols sung about the birth of Jesus. It's a time of celebration. In the midst of all the sights and sounds, the most important question must be asked, Why was Christ born? The apostle Paul answered the question in our verse for today. Christ came into this world to redeem believers from the law.

God's holy law gives us commandments concerning the way we should live. The truth is that all of us have broken God's law. To break His law at one point is to be guilty of the whole law (James 2:10).  We have all sinned and we are all guilty before God (Romans 3:23).

We need to be redeemed, set free, from our sin and guilt. The word redeemed means to pay a price to set a slave or prisoner free. Usually the price paid was in gold or silver. The price Jesus Christ paid to set us free from our sin and guilt was in His own blood. Look to Christ crucified, paying the price for all believers, to be free from slavery to sin, guilt, and shame. The price was greater than all the gold and silver. God gave His Son as our Redeemer. Shame is forever dismissed, and guilt is removed completely from all who truly believe that Jesus paid it all.

Do you deal with the shame of sins from the past? Do you realize that you are guilty in breaking God's holy law? Bring all of your shame and guilt to Jesus Christ. Trust His sacrifice for your sins. Believe that He paid the price for all of your sins at the cross. God received the full payment that Jesus made for our sins. He declared it to the world, when He raised Jesus Christ from the dead. He lives! That's why Christ was born.

God, we believe Jesus paid the price for all of our sins at the cross.
