"As the deer pants for the water brooks,
so pants my soul for You, O God."
Psalm 42:1
A stranger made his way to a pastor's office. The minister was available to talk with him. He said to the pastor, "Thanks for talking with me. I need your help. I need God. For some strange reason, I have a desire for God like never before."
The minister said, "God has put that desire in your heart, because He loves you and wants you to know Him." The pastor opened the Bible and shared verses explaining to him how he could know God. He led him in a prayer to receive God's love and mercy.
Left to ourselves, we would never seek God. "There is none who understands; there is none who seeks after God" (Psalm 14:1-3; Romans 3:11). Our nature has been corrupted because of sin. We have been separated from the desire of God in our mind, will and emotions. Then, grace seeks us, grace that precedes our desire for God. We become like the deer panting after the brooks of water. We seek Him who has already sought us.
The desire for God is the assurance that He may be found. He satisfies those who thirst after Him. He is the water of life who fills us until we know satisfaction like never before. He made us for Himself. He desires us because He loves us. He becomes the desire of our lives, because His grace has given us the desire.
God, we desire You in our lives.
