Conquer Your Fear

"The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?"

Psalm 27:1

The preschool boy was afraid to sleep in a dark bedroom. He told his mother that he didn't like to sleep alone in a dark room. He admitted that he was afraid. His mother said, "Son, you don't need to be afraid, because God is with you." He said, "I know, but God and I need a light in that room." That little fellow could sleep in the light, but he was afraid in the dark. His mother got a night light to put in the room. The boy went to sleep unafraid every night. The light dispelled his fear. The darkness of fear is defeated every time in the presence of God's light. His presence overcomes our fears.

Light is a metaphorical way of saying that God sees all, even in the darkness of night. Nothing evades His attention. The light of God is our salvation or deliverance from all circumstances or people who would harm us. Therefore, the psalmist asks the question, "whom shall I fear?" In the awareness of His constant presence with us, fear is conquered. He promises each of His children, "I will never leave you nor forsake you" (Deuteronomy 31:6; Hebrews 13:5). The light of His word of promise dismisses fear from our lives.

Light and darkness cannot abide together. There is no contest between the two. Light always conquers the darkness of our fear. Faith and the fear of evil cannot abide together. Faith receives the light of God.

Fear says, "How can I know that God is with me? What if He really isn't there for me?" Faith says, "I will fear no evil, for You are with me" (Psalm 23:4). Conquer your fear in the light of God's presence.

LORD, deliver us from all fear.
