How to Trust God

"He is my refuge and my fortress;
my God, in Him I will trust."

Psalm 91:2

A woman was facing many trials and difficulties in life. Her friend told her to trust in God and He would be her safe place. The woman looked at her in silence for a moment, then she said, "How do I know that I'm really trusting in God?" The friend said, "That's a good question. I would say that you are confident enough in God to give Him your problems, knowing that He will help you through them." The friend gave her good advice. God is our safe place as a refuge and fortress. Martin Luther wrote a hymn entitled, "A Mighty Fortress is Our God." He referred to God as a fortress and bulwark never failing. We can trust in the God who never fails.

The woman asked a question about how to trust God. The answer is clearly given in the Bible. "Trust in The LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths" (Proverbs 3:5-6). To trust God means that we don't depend on our own understanding. We simply cannot understand all the ways of God. To trust God is to confidently acknowledge His ability to help us and direct us. All relationships are built on trust. Our relationship with God is acknowledging Him as trustworthy in all things.

Trusting God is taking Him at His word. The Bible gives us the written promises of God for every believer. Trust the promises of God. He is the Promise-Keeper. His word of promise is a sure foundation, that we may trust Him through all of life's experiences. In God we trust with absolute confidence.

God, we trust You as our refuge and strength.
