When You Are Lonely

"For if we live, we live to the Lord;
and if we die, we die to the Lord."

Romans 14:8

Someone asked a widow, "Don't you get lonely living alone?" She smiled, and responded to her friend, "I don't live alone. The Lord lives with me. I talk to Him throughout the day. He has filled my life with joy and peace. More than that, He has promised never to leave me. He will be with me, while I'm living and when I'm dying." That woman knew the joy and assurance of the Lord's abiding presence in her life.

The promise of Jesus to all who believe in Him is "I am with you always" (Matthew 28:20). Unbelievers cannot understand this. The Spirit of Christ lives in the hearts of all believers. His faith, hope, and love assures us of His continued presence (1 Corinthians 13:13). We see Him through the eyes of faith, and experience Him through His great love in our hearts. Not even death can separate us from Him. "For I am persuaded that neither death . . . shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8:38-39).

When you are lonely, remember God made us social beings. We need the fellowship of other people, and Christians need the fellowship of other believers. Yet, in the midst of a crowd, we can still feel alone. Loneliness is simply a reminder to believers that we have temporarily forgotten that God is with us always. Although He is there for us, we can get out of fellowship with Him. In such a time, talk with Him, knowing that you're never alone.

Lord, thank You for the fellowship of the Spirit in our hearts and with others.
