"He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust."
Psalm 91:2
Unbelief says, "God helps those who help themselves. I trust myself in every situation." Faith says, "God is my refuge and my fortress, in Him I will trust." Unbelief seeks to be in control of every possible situation in life. The thought of not being in control is very fearful. Faith understands that there are many situations beyond our control, but faith does not panic, because God is in control. To put it in other words, God is sovereign. He rules over all. He holds us responsible for what we do and what we should do. Yet, the believer also understands that there are many things beyond our control, and nothing beyond God's control. Therefore, we can always trust God to be our refuge and fortress.
The surgeon came into the waiting room to meet with the family. He said, "We've done all that we can do. Now, it's in God's hands." That is a statement of faith that has been made by a surgeon who understands that he has done all that is possible for him to do. He has fulfilled his duty and responsibility. Yet, he wants to leave the family with hope in the worse case scenario. He has refused the script of playing God. He has recognized that nothing is beyond God's control. May God add to his number, those who trust in God. The thought that something is beyond man's control can be frightening. The thought that nothing is beyond God's control is faith, also known as trust.
Is there an area of your life where you find it difficult to trust God? Trusting God is an act of the will, enabled by the grace of God. We choose to trust God. The Spirit of God offers us such faith through the promises of God's Word. Faith and trust in God stands firmly upon the promises of God. We avoid the temptation to trust our ability to produce faith in God, rather, we choose to rest upon what God has promised (Romans 10:17). That's trusting God. For example, a man stands on the floor of an elevator, trusting that he will be enabled to go to another level in the building. He can rest and wait, not trusting in his strength. That's a choice. Likewise, you may say, "I will trust God."
Father, we choose to trust You as our refuge.
