When You Are Downcast

Three weeks after his wife's funeral, the elderly man found that his grief and loneliness was increasing. Surrounding the days when she died, he had family and friends with him. Now, they were busy with their own lives, and he was downcast more than ever. There was a knock at his door. It was a friend who had recently experienced the death of his wife also. They talked for a long time, sharing their emotions, as well as a few tears. When the friend was ready to leave, the man said, "Thank you for coming. You understand how I feel. You brought comfort to me."

The word comfort means to strengthen. During times of your weakness, you can find strength through others. God always wants to comfort you, and one way He does is through others. Friends who understand are a gift from God. They will encourage you, when you are downcast.

If you are going through a difficult time, don't be surprised if God sends someone your way to strengthen you. The Christian life was never designed to live alone. We are members of one another through the body of Christ.

God will use you to comfort, strengthen, and encourage others. Ask God to use you to comfort others who are downcast. He will send someone your way who needs God's comfort through you.

Nevertheless God, who comforts the downcast,
comforted us by the coming of Titus."
