Have you ever heard the expression "good grief?" It's a term that I have heard all my life. To most, it would be meaningless terminology, but to believers in Christ, it has great significance. Before anyone is saved by the grace of God, He leads us to a place of grief over our sins. That's "good grief."
"For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation" (2 Corinthians 7:10). Godly sorrow brings "good grief." We see our sins through the truth of God. The Spirit of God convicts and convinces us of our wrongdoing. We have failed God and others. We see our need of a Savior, found only in Jesus Christ. "Good grief" leads us to salvation in Christ.
After coming to God in Christ, good grief is turned into joy unspeakable and full of glory. It's the joy of knowing that all of our sins are gone through Christ crucified. "The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin" (1 John 1:7). Give God all the glory for total forgiveness in Christ.
As a believer in Christ, you need not grieve over any past sin. Turn away from it. Confess it to God in prayer. Receive fresh cleansing from Christ. "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). It all starts with "good grief."
