Desiring God

Jesus said, "If anyone thirsts,
let him come to Me and drink."

John 7:37

She had been attending church all of her life, but her husband attended rarely. She had often invited him to go with her but he usually refused. One Saturday night, he said, "I'm going to church with you in the morning." She was quite surprised to hear those words. She said, "Well, I'm glad to hear that, but what brought this on?" He replied, "This may sound strange to you, but really, I have a desire to know more about God." He attended that Sunday and continued for weeks to come. Then, he committed his life to Christ and was baptized into the church.

God made our bodies to hunger for food and thirst to drink. Those are instinctive desires put within us by our Creator. He also gives people a desire to know Him. That desire is satisfied through Jesus, who is God revealed in human form (Hebrews 1:1-3). The desire to know God in a personal relationship comes through His grace. Our Lord satisfies that need to know His love and mercy in our lives.

Do you have a desire to know God? Thank Him for such grace. If you know God in a personal relationship, do you desire to know Him more intimately? That also is His grace continuing to work in our hearts. The grace of God gives us the desire, then God's grace alone satisfies the desire. For this reason, the apostle Paul wrote what all believers should say: "But by the grace of God, I am what I am" (1 Corinthians 15:10).

Prayer: Father, we recognize that grace alone has changed our lives, in Christ alone. Amen.
