Grow in Understanding

"Brethren, do not be children in understanding."

1 Corinthians 14:20

The young couple had become parents for the first time. She embraced the baby in her arms, and said to her husband, "Our baby has no way of knowing now how much we love him, but one day he will understand." Her husband said, "I'm sure he feels our love when we hold him, but it will be even better when we can tell him."

The apostle Paul encouraged believers to grow in their faith and understanding of God. A new believer is consider "a babe in Christ." We are to "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ" (2 Peter 3:18). That means we grow in our faith and understanding of God's love.

A baby is first fed milk to grow, followed by solid food in the months and years ahead. The milk and solid food for believers is found in the Bible. It has the spiritual food that we need to grow in our understanding of God. As we grow in understanding of God, our faith becomes stronger.

Are you growing as a believer? If you are not, it is only because of malnutrition. God gives us pastors and other teachers to feed us upon the word of truth. As we grow in grace and understanding, we continue to feed upon a steady diet of Bible teaching. Without the proper spiritual food, we may become weak in our faith. Make sure that you are receiving a balanced diet of God's truth from the Bible. Then, we will mature in our faith. "Do not be children in understanding."

Prayer: Father, may the Holy Spirit open our eyes of understanding as we study the Bible, in Jesus name. Amen.
