"God opposes the proud,
but gives grace to the humble."
1 Peter 5:5
Two Christian men were talking. One said that he committed his life to Christ as a child. The other man said, "I was an adult before I committed my life to Christ. I was a very successful businessman and thought I needed nothing from God, until a tragedy came to my life and family. I humbled myself before God for the first time in my life. He was gracious to me. I deserved nothing from God, but He gave me grace."
Pride tells us that we don't need God in our lives. We can make it just fine without Him. Humility advises us that our only hope is in the grace of God. Humility receives the grace of God without fail. His grace is always sure for those who humble themselves before God. Grace is promised to the humble. The Spirit of grace works humility, a fruit of the Spirit, in our hearts. Humility is both the reception and the evidence of God's grace.
Grace is not only needed for conversion and the forgiveness of our sins, but the entire Christian life is based upon the grace of God working in us. When the pressures and trials of life become too much for us, the grace of God sustains us through it all. His grace is sufficient for our every need.
Prayer: God our Father, Your grace brought us to Christ. Your grace sustains us through all the trials of life. Your grace is sufficient for our every need. We glory in Your grace, through Christ Jesus. Amen.
