Our Eternal Home

"Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed,
we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven,
not built by human hands."

2 Corinthians 5:1

A twelve year-old boy said to his mom, "After grandfather died, I have been thinking a lot about what it would be like to die. I don't really understand." His mother said, "Son, I don't want you to worry about dying. God will be with us and that makes it okay. Death is like moving day. When your grandfather died, he moved out of the old house into a mansion that Jesus prepared for him."

The Bible gives us illustrations and analogies to help us understand death. The apostle Paul spoke of death as being like a move from a tent to an eternal house. Paul was a tent-maker by trade. He understood that all tents wear out. They are only temporary living places. They must be taken down and put away. So it is in these bodies in which we live. Yet, the believer has an assurance by faith in Christ, that God has a new place for us to live in an eternal building. In death, this fading temporary life gives way to eternal life in Christ.

There are so many questions that we could ask about life after death. The Bible answers many of them, yet we must trust God to keep the promise of His Word. He has promised us eternal life in Christ. He was motivated to offer us everlasting life as a love gift through Christ. He only asks us to trust Him to do what He has promised. Living in a tent will one day give way to our eternal home.

Prayer: Father, we trust You for everlasting life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
