Overcome Fear

"The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?"

Psalm 27:1

A young man was leaving his family for combat in a foreign land. The soldier said to his dad, "Pray for me. I know that I'm not supposed to be afraid, but honestly, I am." His dad said, "Son, I understand. Most people would be. I will be praying Psalm 27:1 for you. God is your light and salvation. He is able to deliver you in any situation."

Many months later, he returned on furlough from the battlefield. He said to his dad, "Thanks for praying for me. I also prayed Psalm 27:1 every day. God answered our prayers. He not only delivered me in dangerous places, but most of all, my fears were defeated."

LORD is the covenant name for God. It speaks of His promises to all of His people. God is our light. He is present with us in every situation. He is also our salvation, which means He is able to deliver us from the most difficult situations. When we really believe God is with us always, and that He can deliver us from any situation, then our fear fades away.

Is there a harassing fear in your life? Faith in God as your LORD can overcome any fear. Fear says, "What if God is not with you. Maybe He won't deliver you." Faith says, "God is with me. His goodness and mercy follows me all the days of my life (Psalm 23:4, 6). We have a choice. It's faith in God or the fear of man. Overcome fear with faith in God.

Prayer: LORD, You are our light and salvation; whom shall we fear?
