Dr. Merrill Tenney compared the Holy Spirit flowing in the life of a believer in Christ to a word picture of an old farmhouse kitchen. In one corner was a sink. Above it was a pipe through which flowed a continuous stream of water from a spring outside. The sink stayed full of pure flowing water. So it is in the life of every believer in Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit flows through the life of each one.
Jesus used an analogy of flowing rivers describing symbolically the work of the Holy Spirit in each believer. The flow of water cleanses. So the Holy Spirit applies the cleansing of Christ from all of our sins. The flow of the river provides life for those who drink. Christ satisfies the thirst for every believer unto life everlasting. It is life in the Spirit of the risen Christ. Also, the flow of the river provides power. The flow of power to live the Christian life is through the Holy Spirit.
The flow of the Spirit of Christ within us is like the flow of blood from the heart throughout the body. Our physical lives are totally dependent upon the blood continuing to flow freely. Our spiritual lives are totally dependent upon the power of the Holy Spirit flowing within us. A man said to a minister, "I really would like to be a Christian, but I know that I could never live such a life." The minister responded with a smile, "It's not about us living for Christ. It's about Him living His life through us. He does just that through the power of the Holy Spirit."
Prayer: Lord Jesus, without You we can do nothing. Live Your life through us in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
