The Sin of Unbelief

"Because of unbelief they were broken off,
and you stand by faith."

Romans 11:20

A woman was bothered because many of the people who worked in her office were not believers in Christ. She shared her concern with a Christian friend, saying, "It really bothers me that so many in my office are not believers. I can't understand why anyone would not believe in God and His Son." Her friend said, "Have you ever thought that they may not understand why you believe. Let's pray for them and share the good news of Christ as we have the opportunity."

Our standing with God is based upon a faith relationship. The only way we can please God is by faith (Hebrews 11:6). Faith is always our connection with God. We walk by faith with God. We offer our prayers through faith in God. We know by faith that God is with us always.

Unbelief denies the presence of God, refuses to walk with with God and never knows the joy of answered prayer. Unbelief is the sin that blocks us from a personal relationship with God. It is the sin that causes us to miss the fullness of God's goodness and grace. It robs us of love divine, joy and peace with God.

The Holy Spirit focuses on one sin in our lives above all others. It's the sin of unbelief. Jesus taught that the Holy Spirit convicts us of the sin known as unbelief (John 16:8-11). There is an important reason for dealing with that one sin. It is the sin that hinders us from receiving all that God has for us. A woman said to her pastor, "I want all that God has for me." Her pastor responded, "It's all yours to be received by faith. Only unbelief can stop you."

God, we confess all of our unbelief as sin. We choose to trust in Your goodness and receive all that You have for us by faith in Jesus Christ. Amen.
