"God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night.
So the evening and the morning were the first day."
Genesis 1:5
The nine year old boy was looking forward to his little league baseball game coming the next morning. At bed time he said to his dad, "I wish that we didn't have night. I'm ready to play baseball now, and I have to wait until morning. Why couldn't God give daylight all the time? We could get in a lot more games." His dad smiled and said, "The reason is that God knows boys like you need sleep and rest. If you don't rest, you really won't feel like playing tomorrow."
God created day and night for us. His purpose is obvious. We may enjoy all the activity of the day, but the rest at night renews our strength. God knows our weakness, and He provides for our rest. There is a spiritual application as well. We need to rest in God, that we may be prepared to finish the work of service He has for each one of us. The Bible records stories of people who received dreams that changed their lives. God has different ways of putting into our hearts His plans for our lives. Don't give up the dreams of your life. The dream of hope energizes us for a new day.
Day and night are also metaphors for good times and bad. So it is in life. Some have referred to the bad experiences as "the dark night of the soul." I hope that you are not in that experience now, but if you are, trust God for the new day coming in your life. The darkness will pass away. A new day will come for you. Don't give up hope. We all go through the dark valley in life. It's darkest before the dawn. Walk by faith, not by sight. The sun will shine for you again. A new day is coming for you.
God, through the dark night of the soul, lead us to a new day.
