"I have learned the secret of being content
in any and every situation."
Philippians 4:12, NIV
Being content is one of the great lessons in life. To think that a person could be content in every situation is hard for some to believe. Yet, the apostle Paul stated in a letter from his prison cell, he had learned to be content in every situation. So, what is the secret?
Being content in every situation is not about outward circumstances, but an inner relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Paul testified of the peace in his heart. This is a fruit of the Spirit of Christ working in him. The Spirit of Christ is in the believer everywhere in every situation. Trying to find a situation which would give us peace is a wild goose chase for the most part. We are looking in the wrong direction. It's not about a situation, rather it's about a person. The Lord himself and our relationship with him is the secret.
Being content is about knowing and doing the will of God. The apostle Paul knew that he was doing God's will for his life. That did not mean he wouldn't have opposition, conflict and problems. Looking for a problem free life in order to be content is the wrong approach. Paul was content in every situation, even in the hard places and difficult situations, because he was in the will of God for his life.
Being content in every situation is understanding that God can change your circumstances according to his will. God is not a helpless spectator. He is the Lord God Almighty. "The Most High rules in the kingdom of men," Daniel 4:32. Paul understood that God was Lord over every situation in his life. Therefore, he did not find his contentment in the situation, but in the God who rules over every situation.
God, remind us often that You are Lord over all our circumstances.
