"Be imitators of God as dear children."
Ephesians 5:1
The little boy looked up at his dad as he shaved. After a pause of silence, he said, "Dad, I want to shave." Rather than tell the preschool boy that he was too young to shave, he agreed to the request. The dad handed him the electric razor and watched his son imitate his actions. That's what our heavenly Father wants us to do, imitate His actions toward others. God is love, and when we love others in word and deed, we imitate our Father.
Jesus is the perfect imitation of God in word and deed. He only did what He saw the Father doing. Jesus said, "The Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do, for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner" (John 5:19).
Jesus always did the will of the Father. That means two important things. First, Jesus showed us the will of God the Father in all things which He did and said. Secondly, we see the Father through the Son. Jesus said, "He who has seen Me has seen the Father" (John 14:9).
Knowing the will of God is not as hard as some of us make it. No, it's really not complicated. We simply need to ask one question. What would Jesus do? Therein lies the secret to understanding the will of God. The difficult question is something else. Can we do God's will? His grace enables us.
God, give us grace to do Your will.
