When Trouble Comes

"I cried out to God with my voice - to God with my voice,
and He gave ear to me. In the day of my trouble I sought the LORD."

Psalm 77:1-2

A minister visited a man who had trouble in his life. At the end of their conversation, the minister asked him, "Could I pray with you to ask for God's help?" The man said, "I don't think so. I didn't call on God when I had no trouble. I don't think it would be right to call on him now." The minister honored his choice.

Could his problem be one of pride? Pride says, "I don't need God in my life. I will work out my own problems." Humility says, "I need God all the time. I need His help in the good times and bad. Without Him I could do nothing."

We may choose to allow our troubles to become a time of spiritual growth, as we trust God to help us and call upon Him in prayer. A woman said to a Christian friend, "I thank God for my troubles. It's during the time of trouble that I pray more intensely. Trouble is no fun, but it has drawn me closer to God." It's during the times of trouble that we either grow closer to God or we become bitter. Our troubles make us better people or bitter people. The choice is ours.

I hope you are not having trouble in these days, but if you are, God will hear your prayers. He promises to help us in time of need. My favorite prayer promise is Hebrews 4:16. "Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need." When trouble comes, God promises to help the believer in time of need. He's ready to help you.

God, You know my need. I ask for Your help.
