"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who has blessed us with all spiritual blessings
in heavenly places in Christ."
Ephesians 1:3
A pastor was praying with one of his church members. The man prayed, "Oh God, please bless our church and our families. We plead with you to send Your blessings upon us." After both men had prayed, the pastor said, "I've got good news for you. We need not plead with God to bless us. He already has given us all spiritual blessings in Christ." The pastor read our verse for today. The man thanked the pastor for showing him that truth in Scripture. He saw for the first time that God has already blessed us with all spiritual blessings in Christ.
In Bible days, kings made covenants with their people. The king would make written promises called blessings of good things he would do for his obedient people. Curses were the threats that were written of bad things to happen for the disobedient. Moses mediated the covenant law for the people of God. It included blessings and curses. Christ came as the Mediator of the everlasting covenant. He died on the cross to take the curse of our sins. Now, He is in heavenly places, that we may receive all spiritual blessings through faith in Him.
Read the first chapter of Ephesians just to see a few of the blessings that God has already given us in Christ, including His love, forgiveness of sins, grace and wisdom, knowledge of His will, adoption as children of God, the promised Holy Spirit and the hope of glory. A Christian said to me years ago, "I want everything God has for me." I responded, "You have it all in Christ." God has blessed us.
Father, we receive all blessings through our Lord Jesus Christ.
