"For the LORD is good; His mercy is everlasting;
and His truth endures to all generations."
Psalm 100:5
The man was an atheist, and he enjoyed challenging others to public debates. He was ruthless and cynical in mocking anyone who believed in God. He was condescending to repeatedly say, "Only an ignorant person could believe in God." On the road one day, he had a wreck and rolled his car. During the wreck he cried out instinctively, "Lord have mercy." Amazingly, he walked away from the car. He only had a few scratches and bruises. He said to those who gathered, "Did anyone hear me?" None of them did. Later, he thought how fortunate he had been to walk away from the wreck. Could it be that there is a God who heard his cry? Not long after the wreck, he humbled himself to admit to all who would listen that he believed in God.
God's mercy is offered to all. His mercy endures to all generations. The essence of sin is thinking and acting like we can live without God. Sometime, we are suddenly removed from our comfort zone to discover our need for God. Then, we may experience God's mercy.
To discover our need for God is the greatest spiritual breakthrough in life. When we fall from our high wire of pride, we can fall into the safety net of God's mercy. We discover that God is real, and His mercy is there for us. God delights in showing us His goodness through His mercy.
Have you got a need or problem in your life? If so, it's time to pray and discover God's goodness. You may say, "But, I really don't know how to pray." That's no problem. Just say, "Lord have mercy." I know He will answer, because that's who He is. And remember, His mercy is everlasting.
LORD, have mercy on us.
