God's Purpose for You

"And we know that all things work together for good
to them that love God, to them who are the called
according to His purpose."

Romans 8:28

After a teenager broke her leg, it was put in a cast. Her friends wrote their names on the cast. Someone also wrote "Romans 8:28." Another teenager asked, "What could a Bible verse have to do with anyone breaking their leg?" The young person who wrote the verse on the cast said, "Romans 8:28 says that God can bring good out of all things, and that includes a broken leg." God didn't break her leg, and that certainly wasn't a good thing to happen to anyone. However, God is able to bring good out of "all things."

The promise of Romans 8:28 is for the called. These are believers who were called to faith in Christ, "to them that love God." God can take the bad things that happen in our lives and use them for good. He fulfills His purpose for believers in all things.

And just what is God's purpose? It is to conform us to the likeness of Christ (Romans 8:29-30). That is God's goal for the life of every believer. We are to grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ (2 Peter 3:18). That includes more than academic information. It includes experiencing situations in life that help us to understand the heart of Christ.

Think of the worse thing that has happened in your life. Could it be hardship, suffering, rejection, or sorrow? When we face such situations, there is a question for every believer to ask. How could this experience be used to make me more like Christ? That is God's purpose for all who are called to Christ.

God, fulfill Your purpose in our lives.
