"Bless the LORD, O my soul!"
Psalm 104:1
The pastor was teaching the Bible from Psalm 104. After the class ended, one of his members came to ask him a question. The man said, "I thought God blessed us. How could we possibly bless God?" The pastor said, "The word bless has more than one meaning. Certainly God does bless us in many ways. However, when we bless God, the Bible means that we worship or praise God." In Psalm 104, to bless the LORD is to praise Him. The book of Psalms is the hymn book of ancient Israel. They praised God in their songs of worship. So should we.
God is referred to as LORD. We notice all four letters are capitalized. This is God's covenant name. His covenant is His word of promise to all who trust in Him. We praise God for who He is, as well as His covenant promises for all who believe.
Covenant is best illustrated through marriage. When a couple marry, they exchange wedding vows. Those promises are made because they love one another. God loves us, and He has made wonderful promises to all who receive His vows of love.
Worship is the believer's way of expressing his love for the LORD. We love Him because He first loved us. Love is often expressed in songs. A couple in love may say, "They're playing our song." It is perhaps a song that expresses how they feel about each other. Real worship is receiving God's love and expressing our love for Him. One way we do that is through hymns and songs to praise the LORD. Or, you could say, "Bless the LORD, O my soul!"
Bless the LORD, O my soul!
