"For wisdom is better than rubies,
and all the things one may desire
cannot be compared with her."
Proverbs 8:11
In Bible days, as today, rubies were treated as a special treasure. Only the wealthiest could afford the price of rubies. Yet, the writer of Proverbs has discovered something far more valuable, namely wisdom. He places wisdom as better than anything that anyone could want.
The Bible makes it clear that wisdom is available to all without price. God's wisdom is not for sale. It is offered freely to all who ask in faith (James 1:5-8). Doubt says, "I can ask God for wisdom, but I'm not sure that He would give it to me." Faith says, "I will ask God for wisdom and I shall receive, because God has promised it to all who believe."
Life is a chain of decisions. Every link requires wisdom to make the best choice. A grandparent gave a grandson some money for his birthday. His dad took him to a store to spend the money on whatever he wanted. After looking for more than an hour without making a choice, he asked his dad to make the choice for him. Dad said, "Son, it's your money and your choice. If I chose something for you, it may not be what you really wanted." Sometime making choices is so difficult, we had rather someone else make it for us.
God wants us to make our choices. We are responsible for the consequences. Yet, God does promise to give us wisdom (James 1:5). If we ask God in faith to give us wisdom, He promises to do just that. When we have His wisdom, doubts are dismissed, faith is confident, and peace assures us.
God, give me wisdom to make good decisions.
