"Then Jesus said to them again, 'Most assuredly,
I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep."
John 10:7
When Jesus referred to being the door of the sheep, He uses an illustration that brought instant understanding to the ancient people of Israel. After a shepherd had led his sheep into the sheepfold for the night, they were surrounded by rock walls of protection. There was only one opening to the sheepfold. The shepherd would lay down to sleep in that place. He was the door of protection through the night for his sheep.
When we see the shepherd laying down to be the door for the sheep, we see another illustration of Christ laying down his life for all believers when He died at the cross. Jesus said, "I lay down My life for the sheep" (John 10:15). Any shepherd in Israel understood when he was laying down at the door of the sheepfold, that he could be attacked by a wild animal seeking to make prey of the sheep.
Are you a believer in Jesus Christ? If so, He is your Shepherd. The relationship gives you a security that is found in no one else. He was willing to lay down His life for your sins at the cross. He died in your place. He lives to lead and guide you, to protect you as He watches over you. The sheep were totally dependent upon their shepherd for all things. Believers trust Christ to save and keep them. Trust Christ completely.
